Buying a Receiver Hitch? Here are some things to consider:
Receiver hitches come in three sizes:
1.25 inch, 2 inch, and 2.5 inch square receivers. Many bike racks and cargo carriers require 2-inch receiver hitches, so it’s good to plan what you want to use your hitch for before you purchase it.
There are five hitch classes of towing and tongue weight capacities.
Class 1 and 2 hitches are most common for cars, smaller SUV’s and small trucks. Class 3, 4 and 5 hitches are common on larger minivans, pickups, SUVs and almost all RVs.
Vehicle Capacities.
Auto manufacturers specify the towing and tongue weight capacities for each model in their product line. Smaller vehicles are almost always restricted to a Class 1 or 2 receiver hitch.
Warning:
I
nstalling a larger hitch will NOT increase the towing and tongue weight capacity for your vehicle. Consult your owner's manual for more information on your vehicle's towing capacity.
How to Choose?
There are some vehicles for which multiple hitch options are available. When selecting the best hitch option for your vehicle you might consider these factors:
What is the gross towing weight of anything that you will be towing?
What are the weights of your trailer or the gear that you will be towing or carrying on your hitch?
Do you have a bike or cargo rack that only fits a 1.25 inch or 2 inch receiver hitch?
Do you have a styling preference for round tube over the traditional square tube hitch? (The receiver tube is always square).
Do you have a color preference other than black?
